Key Stage 1

In your Shoes

Discover historical characters from North Devon’s past through the shoes they wore. Examining the footwear of Romans, Victorians, soldiers and seamen students will connect material and function to the everyday lives of the wearer. The students will then use collaborative and active learning in a guessing activity exploring themes such as decoration, functionality and sustainable materials.

This workshop lasts approximately 1 Hour. £30 per workshop (up to 30 attendees)

The workshop takes place in our learning room. Groups are then free for a teacher/leader led exploration of the museum.

Toys from the Past

In this popular workshop students discover how toys have changed throughout history. Using original and replica toys students will use play and collaborative learning to understand and identify different materials and changes in technology. Inspired by these objects students will create a Victorian peg doll to take home.

This workshop lasts approximately 1 Hour. £30 per workshop (up to 30 children)

The workshop takes place in our learning room. Groups are then free for a teacher/leader led exploration of the museum.

Curious Creatures

Studying the museum’s amazing insect collection students will use collaborative and active learning to explore the life cycles of butterflies, spiders, bees and dragonflies. Looking at how insects form an essential part of our ecosystem students will then explore the museum to look for objects that insects helped create.

The workshop takes place in our learning room and museum displays. Groups are then free for a teacher/leader led exploration of the museum.

Portraits in Art

What can a portrait tell us? Studying the portraits of lords, poets and artists in the collection students will explore how art reflects society, records the past and tells a story. Inspired by original paintings students will produce their own portraits developing their creative skills and understanding how art can shape history.

Movers and Shakers: Significant local individuals from the past

This engaging workshop will use collaborate learning to study inspiring people from North Devon’s past. Utilising research and museum objects the students will discuss achievements, character and how people can shape society to understand how a person is deemed historically important.
