Creating Communities: 25 Years of North Devon Homes and the History of Barnstaple Housing celebrates twenty-five years since the creation of North Devon Homes as a housing association, and explores the story of social housing in Barnstaple and North Devon, from the 17th century to the present day.
Existing social housing stock was transferred over from North Devon Council in February 2000 to North Devon Homes – a registered charity providing affordable homes for people who need them. This year North Devon Homes are celebrating their 25th Anniversary as a housing association and today cover over 3,300 homes, providing accommodation to over 10,000 customers.

As well as exploring North Devon Homes and their more recent redevelopment of sites such as Forches in Barnstaple, the exhibition explores health and housing in Barnstaple and North Devon including alms-houses in the 17th century, the formation of workhouses and their redevelopment in the 1830s, the slum clearances of the 1930s and 1950s and development of housing estates in Barnstaple post 1940s.

This year, the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon’s Annual Symposium delves deeper into the history of health and housing in North Devon.
