In this remarkable event, American-British historian, Dr Todd Gray, will introduce one of Devon’s great untapped historical resources as revealed in his book due for release this October, Devon’s Home Front Diaries, 1937-1945.
It’s during this talk that Dr Gray will reveal the identities of North Devon’s Mass Observation writers. Mass Observation was a social research organisation founded in 1937 to capture the everyday lives, thoughts and feelings of ordinary people as chronicled through diary writing. The men and women from North Devon who participated in the project were writing from Barnstaple, Bideford, Clovelly, Ilfracombe and North Molton, and Dr Gray will be discussing their experiences and perspectives from 1937 to 1945.
The talk will give a taste of a forthcoming Museum exhibition, which will open in March 2026. Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for further information.
Devon’s Home Front Diaries, 1937 to 1945 will be available from the Museum or direct from www.stevensbooks.co.uk.
