Call for stories: Help us map the heart of Barnstaple

Jun 2, 2025   -   Dec 31, 2026

The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon is creating a new Digital Community Trail, and we want your stories to help bring it to life.

We’re inviting local residents, past and present, to share their personal memories, anecdotes, and reflections about a place in Barnstaple—whether it’s a treasured childhood moment, a local legend, a historic event, or a hidden corner that holds special meaning.

Your contributions will help us create a rich, living map of Barnstaple, one that celebrates the everyday experiences and untold histories of the people who know it best.

We welcome stories from all ages and backgrounds.

Let’s preserve and celebrate the spirit of Barnstaple—together.

Examples of local stories

Location: Classic cinema, Boutport Street, Barnstaple, 21 July 1975

“I was 14 years old and it was the start of the summer holidays.  My mother took me to see ‘The 7th Voyage of Sinbad’.  We didn’t go to the pictures that often and to put these trips into context we had a 19” Ferguson Black and White TV at home and there was only BBC1, BBC2 and ITV in those days to choose from and I was always the one that was asked to turn the TV over because I sat the nearest and was the youngest.  So to see this film on ‘The Big Screen’ in colour was still very much an occasion and an experience to be enjoyed.  Plus the ‘popcorn’ treat of course!”

Location: Brannam Pottery Show Room/Shop, Litchdon Street, circa 1975-76

“My mother always supported local potteries and when we moved to North Devon in 1974 it wasn’t long before we discovered Brannams in Litchdon Street.  I remember going in there and Mum bought a ‘seconds’ vase and conveniently there was a mug with my name on it […]  A proud part of Barnstaple history – sad though how it all ended.”
