Join Martin Pailthorpe from the King’s Nympton History Society for what promises to be an engaging talk about the history of King’s Nympton.
Martin Pailthorpe is a former TV journalist and producer whose career in expedition, adventure and wildlife filming took him all over the world. Now living in what he laughingly calls retirement he has thrown himself into the life of King’s Nympton, where his family have owned a house – the old pub pictured in the archive photograph- since 1966.
His original idea for the King’s Nympton exhibition, currently on display in our temporary exhibition space, was intended to be a showcase for the videos he has recorded with people who grew up in the community in the 40s and 50s. Clips from these films can be viewed as part of the exhibition. But he and other members of the King’s Nympton History Society discovered a wealth of other stories to tell – from the life of a Victorian parson, school and social life, and long vanished shops and businesses, to the intriguing story of the smallpox epidemic of 1755 and an unholy row between the parson and the squire.

Martin is an experienced speaker, having travelled all over the country to talk to schools and lecture societies. He will talk about his own motivation for digging up the history of the village, and tell the stories behind many of the exhibits in the exhibition.
