Merchants and Manufacturers

This gallery covers Barnstaple’s Golden Age.  During the 16th and 17th centuries local merchants first realised the lucrative possibilities of international trade.  Fortunes were made, through trade and through privateering.  Displayed here are some of the precious objects made or used by our merchants and craftspeople, including a 17th century pottery kiln, tableware pewter and the Huguenots table rug.
