Volunteer with Us

There are many ways you can volunteer to care for North Devon’s heritage, helping to provide an amazing service to Barnstaple’s museum visitors. The museum would not run without its experienced and friendly team of volunteers whose total annual hours are equal to five full time staff.

Why volunteer? Did you know, volunteering has been proven to benefit your overall well-being as well as your community? Working in our historic listed building volunteers are involved in a range of activities and projects. We provide a safe and friendly atmosphere where you can learn new skills and build confidence, enhance and share a passion for North Devon history, attend social outings and exhibition talks and feel appreciated as a vital part of our organisation.

What can I do? There is a range of volunteer opportunities including introducing visitors to the building and its collections; assisting in the tearooms and museum shop; caring for collections; or helping with the museum’s learning programme. The yearly programme of exhibitions and events also provides volunteers with the opportunity to gain skills in exhibition installation, event management, research and curation.

Some of our volunteering roles are –

Museum Host

How do I apply? To become a volunteer download our volunteer application form. You will be invited for an informal induction to meet the team and see which roles are right for you. Please be aware you must be aged 16 or over to volunteer, under 18’s must get permission from their parent or guardian.
